Steam end of 35,000 kw, 3600 rpm hydrogen-cooled generating unit of the Pennsylvania Power Company, New Castle, Pa. Inlet steam is 800 pounds and 900 degrees F.
The unit weighs 289 tons, exclusive of condenser; is 58 feet long, 13 feet wide at widest point and 16 feet high from floor line to top of big arched connecting steam pipe.
About 274,400 pounds of water in the form of steam is required per hour to spin the turbine blades varying in length from less than 2 inches to 18 inches, -- tips of the longest blades travel about 789 miles per hour, or faster than the velocity of sound.
