May 13, 1945

Renewing the youth of the Statue of Liberty in preparation for the day Germany or Japan surrenders, workmen this week completed modernizing her floodlighting system.

Samuel G. Hibben, director of applied lighting for the Westinghouse Lamp Division who guided the relighting, is shown focusing one of the battery of 16 1,000-watt incandescent floodlights which is located at the base of the monument under the face of the figure.
