The luminaries of the cold cathode fluorescent lamps, especially developed by Sylvania Electric Products Inc. to operate on the 600 volts direct current of the New York subway system, are designed for simple and easy lamp replacement and cleaning.

Each of the three continuous rows of fluorescent lamps are shielded by directional type glass diffusing panels divided into sections which can be unscrewed from one side in order that the whole panel can be swung down from the ceiling for easy maintenance, as shown here.
