A white-gloved technician labors fastidiously over a compact electronics systems for spacecraft.

The tiny circuits are built up in layers of ultra-pure metals only millionths of an inch thick.

Any trace of dust will disrupt the system.

Therefore, employees of the Cutler-Hammer Airborne Instrument Laboratory, Deer Park, N.Y., wear white smocks and caps in a room sealed by double doors.
