Although nothing alike in appearance or means of operation, both of these "slide rules" perform the mathematical functions of multiplication and division the same basic way: by means of logarithms.

The standard slide rule does it mathematically, using some of its several scales.

The tiny wafer of silicon, however, functions electronically, using a principal known as molecular electronics which eliminates conventional components and electronic circuits.

The wafer, of functional electronic block, was devised by scientists at the Westinghouse research laboratories.
