Fuel Cells

January 11, 1964

Laboratory model of fuel cells which convert chemical energy directly into electrical energy, now being developed by the Swedish firm, ASEA, to furnish power for submarines of the Swedish Royal Navy. Submarines employing fuel cells will have action time 10 to 30 times that of diesel-electric subs. Fuel cells are expected to be fully competitive with nuclear power systems for medium and smaller-sized submarines with action time of less than one month. This summer, ASEA is beginning production of fuel cells for such special power application as mining equipment, fork-lift trucks and spacecraft.
