Experimental model of new General Electric fuel cell design shows zirconia solid electrolyte (white cylinder). Larger dark cylinder is a graphite liner for the quartz container. Flow meters at either side measure flow rate of natural gas and oxygen. Pressure regulator is in the background. This experimental model is not self-sustaining in regard to heat; instead of burning the effluent gases, it is heated inside an electric furnace when in operation.
