De-ion gaps on this distribution transformer detoured the man-made lightning stroke which hit the transmission line at the top but was by-passed to ground by the transformer.

Dr. P.L. Bellaschi became an expert on lightning by conducting tests like this in the Westinghouse high voltage laboratory at Sharon, Pa., to develop improved ways of protecting electric power systems against lightning attack.
