Artificial Lightning

no date

Struck by a 3,600,000-volt man-made lightning bolt, this transmission pole is shown being ripped to pieces as the lightning surge cuts its explosive path.

This photograph was made during a demonstration of the explosive "cold" lightning and the newly captured "hot" or burning lightning, in the high voltage laboratory of the Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Company's transformer division in Sharon, Pa.
