The half-million volt Westinghouse surge generator in operation at The Franklin Institute.

The artificial lightning bolt, striking with the power of a 50 calibre bullet, shatters a four-inch billet of wood so quickly the camera's eye pictured only the top of the block.

The rest was instantaneously splintered and knocked out of camera range.
