Struck by a 3,600,000-volt man-made lightning bolt, this transmission pole is shown being ripped to pieces as the lightning surge cuts its explosive path.

This photograph was made during a demonstration of the explosive "cold" lightning and the newly captured "hot" or burning lightning, in the high voltage laboratory of the Westinghouse Electric & Manufacturing Company's transformer division at Sharon, Pa.
