It is noteworthy that in all 7 rounds of Navy 5"/38 shells fuzed with proximity fuzes were fired and that 3 bursts on target were recorded bringing the plane down in flames. Tests such as these were conducted in order to prove the effectiveness
of proximity fuzed shells in actual use.
