This micrograph of a lead telluride crystal magnified 200 times, shows typical results of etching. The map-like lines are grain boundaries where the direction of the crystal changes; the dots identify those areas where dislocations intersect the crystal surface. Evaluation of the pattern and density of those etched areas helps determine the degree of perfection of the crystal.
