Philo Holcomb, Jr., of the Western Union Company, adjusts one of the units of the "vario-plex," which he invented as an aid to more efficient and faster service for heavy users of leased wires and trunk lines. The mechanism also contains a metering system. The telegraph industry's birth will be celebrated May 24, 1944, the 100th anniversary of Samuel F.B. Morse's first successful message, "What Hath God Wrought!"
