Cecil Coker of Bell Telephone Laboratories adjusts a computer-generated model of the vocal tract. A graphical representation of the vocal tract model appears on the oscilloscope.

The oscilloscope outline of the tract can be adjusted to form shapes which correspond to those formed when making basic sounds.

At the same time the sounds are generated by a speech synthesizer and heard by the researcher.
